Cynthia S. Zukas MBE founded Lechwe Trust in 1986 to promote and support the development of visual arts in Zambia. To date, the Trust owns a large collection of contemporary art and has continued to promote the growth of visual arts in various ways, the latest being the creation and establishment of the Art Gallery at Gallery Office Park located in Rhodes Park residential area of Lusaka – Zambia.
The Lechwe Trust Bi-Annual Emerging Artist Award competition is dedicated to giving talented emerging artists in Zambia a platform to showcase their artwork to the public.
This is a call for young and upcoming artists to submit works of art for the next Emerging Artists Award Competition. An exhibition of winning and selected artworks is scheduled for mid-November 2023 at the Lechwe Trust Art Gallery
THE AWARD
The best artwork of one artist will be nominated by an independent jury for the First Prize of ZMK12,000 CZYAA Emerging Artist Award.
Additionally, two other artists will be selected for the runner-up positions of
Second Prize of ZMK8,000 and
Third Prize of ZMK4,000.
ELIGIBILITY
Among the applications, a number of artists chosen will submit artworks that will have not been exhibited anywhere before . Artists aged between 16 and 30 years are eligible. Art organisations from all over Zambia are welcome to submit their members artwork.
HOW TO APPLY
With no set theme, young artists can submit their applications in a wide range of media: painting, photography, etchings, drawing, collage, graphics, sculpture, pottery, printmaking, mixed-media – all are acceptable. Whereas, if an applicant is capable of providing technical equipment required for showcasing video, film, performance and conceptual art forms, the Competition would be open to accepting these forms of art with prior arrangement and approval by the organisers.
The application should include a brief biography, photocopy of ID (NRC/ Passport) and a short write-up on the artwork (400 words max), the nature of the work, and the idea behind the artwork.
