Mr William Bwalya Miko, Vice Chair of Lechwe Trust, Abstract painter, Curator, Culture consultant, Senior Art lecturer and Head of Department in Fine Arts at the Zambian Open University, got a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ngoma Awards Ceremony held on Tuesday evening at the Mulungushi Conference Centre in Lusaka.

William is one of the founding members of the Zambia National Visual Arts Council (1989 ) and he also managed the Henry Tayali Visual Arts Centre in Lusaka in 1994. He also contributed to the establishment of a first ever Visual Arts degree course at the School of Media, Performing and Fine Arts at Zambian Open University (ZAOU) in 2010.

At the first graduation of ZAOU fine arts graduates in 2014, Mr Miko turned himself into a “human canvas”, wearing a pure white suit as students daubed and slashed paint of different colours over him in a performance titled ‘Correcting the National Anomaly”

In 2020, Mr Miko unfortunately had to have his left leg amputated due to diabetes. That did not stop him or slow him down. He has gone on to curate many shows, including 3 at our Lechwe Art gallery and reminiscent of Vincent Van Gogh, he went on to immortalise his ‘lost-leg’ in various sketches done while he was in hospital! Please watch out for the full story of the ‘ Flying Foot ‘ in the Saturday Edition of The Mast. Mr Miko is a huge inspiration to us all, including artists both young and old.
We, at Lechwe Trust and Lechwe Art Gallery would like to sincerely thank Mr William Miko for his hardwork and contribution to the arts and work towards ‘correcting the national anomaly’ over the years. We honestly could not be where we are without his passion, hard work, resilience, and commitment.

Congratulations once again, William Miko, on your outstanding achievements and on receiving the Ngoma “Recognition and lifetime achievement award” in visual arts. Well done William !!

“You may wonder in the world why developed countries are synonymous with support to the arts. If you want to develop a country, you must emphasise on creativity because creativity permeates through each and every sector” – William Miko, Excerpt from his acceptance speech delivered at the 2023 Ngoma Awards.
