Kafue Colours

Kafue Colours features two Kafue-based artists, Albert Mulenga and McDonald Nkhoma, depicting the land, light, and life of Kafue. Through their work, the artists reveal the unfiltered realities of a town negotiating change where movement and economic activities are set against the still, quiet waters of the river and its wildlife.

The town carries memories of transit by road, rail, and water. Nkhoma captures vintage 109 Series 1 & 2, locomotive and a Volkswagen Beetle “The Bug” as markers of a bygone era, forgotten, yet lingering in the present. Old houses, bridges, and familiar landmarks chart Zambia’s ongoing transformation, turning former symbols of modern luxury into quiet sites of history and memory.

Mulenga explores the conversation between nature and human settlement. Through Fishmongers and Three Virgins, he shows how Kafue maintains its traditional rites of passage, cultural roots and economic activities. His works bridge the town’s rural heritage and modern realities.

This exhibition portrays a town negotiating change on its own terms, a place where memory, wildlife, culture, and the daily hustle co-exist.
